From Gurukul to Generative AI: Philosophical Foundations for AI-Enabled Multicultural Education

Abstract

This study examines the philosophical foundations of integrating ancient Indian Gurukul principles with generative artificial intelligence in multicultural education contexts. It investigates how the holistic, value-based pedagogical traditions of the Gurukul system can inform the ethical design and implementation of AI technologies in diverse educational settings. Employing a qualitative research design combining philosophical inquiry, thematic analysis, and comparative case study analysis, this study systematically examines primary texts on Gurukul education, contemporary literature on multicultural education and AI, and case studies of AI applications in educational contexts. Thematic analysis was conducted using NVivo 12, identifying core principles across 150 sources published between 2000-2025. The analysis reveals significant synergies between Gurukul principles and AI integration, including personalized learning (alignment score: 0.89), holistic development (0.85), and dialogical learning (0.82). However, critical tensions emerged regarding human relationships, spiritual development, and value transmission, areas where AI cannot replicate human mentorship. The study develops a novel conceptual framework integrating Gurukul principles with AI design, identifying three dimensions: philosophical foundations (holistic development, dialogue, value-based education, cultural rootedness, environmental harmony), AI design principles (personalized learning, cultural responsiveness, relationship enhancement), and implementation strategies (teacher training, community engagement, ethical guidelines). This is among the first studies to systematically examine the philosophical integration of ancient Indian educational traditions with generative AI, offering a culturally grounded framework for ethical AI design in multicultural education. The framework has significant implications for educational policy, teacher professional development, and technology design, particularly in the context of India's National Education Policy 2020 and global efforts to create inclusive, humane AI-enabled learning ecosystems.
