Cahier for Aline and Before and After by Paul Gauguin: From Self-Writing to the Philosophy of Art
Abstract
While the visual art of Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) is widely known, his written work often remains in the background. Like many painters of his time, Gauguin devoted himself to writing from the very beginning of his artistic career, building a substantial body of written work that reveals the unique nature of his artistic journey. Starting from the premise that Paul Gauguin's writing constitutes the laboratory of his art, this study aims to examine his writings in order to highlight their place within Gauguin's artistic production, as well as their role in understanding his painting and aesthetic choices.
