Postmodern Ethics and Desire for Purity in The Human Stain by Philip Roth
Abstract
Roth’s oeuvre, and specifically The Human Stain (2000), stands as a site of ontological dehiscence where the aporias of postmodern subjectivity are diffracted. While traditional exegesis has long dwelt on the mechanisms of racial passing or the Saturnine dimension of Nathan Zuckerman, a shadow remains regarding the strictly ethical dimension of this yearning for limpidity which, under the guise of immanent justice, verges on semiotic terrorism. To this end, it is necessary to interrogate how the ideal of absolute transparency, this hygienization of the Logos, obliterates the complexity of being to substitute it with a simulacrum of purity. Furthermore, does the quest for purity in postmodern America not paradoxically constitute an obliteration of the human by reducing the subject to a peremptory epithet? To what extent does the dialectic between Coleman Silk's sovereign self-invention and the collective drive for lustration reveal the failure of a postmodern ethics unable to tolerate the alterity of the trace? This study thus proposes to examine the irreducible antinomy between the impulse for societal catharsis, this endeavor to purge the social body of all moral dross and the irreducibility of the stain, understood as the indelible idiosyncrasy of existence. In order to provide an efficient answer to this inquiry, the present exegesis aims to decrypt the paradigm of purity as a coercive tool within the narrative, so as to rehabilitate the stain not as a blemish, but as the sole testimony of an authentic presence in the world. To achieve this, postmodern critique, articulated through the tools of Derridean deconstruction and Foucauldian archaeology of power, will serve as the methodological framework. However, this approach must guard against the risk of absolute relativism that would dissolve Coleman Silk’s tragedy into mere textual instability, omitting the visceral and carnal dimension of his fall. This study will ultimately be structured around two movements: first, the architecture of the purge, and second, the ontology of the trace and the failure of biographical virginity.
