Enhancing Healthcare Data Security Using Microsoft Azure Cloud Services
Abstract
The rapid digitization of healthcare records has increased both the operational value and the security exposure of patient data. As hospitals, insurers, and health-technology vendors migrate electronic health records (EHRs) and other protected health information (PHI) to cloud platforms, safeguarding this data against breaches, unauthorized access, and regulatory non-compliance has become a central concern for healthcare information technology governance. This article examines how Microsoft Azure cloud services can be systematically applied to strengthen healthcare data security, using a layered defense-in-depth model spanning identity and access management, encryption, network segmentation, continuous threat monitoring, and regulatory governance. Drawing on peer-reviewed cloud-security and health-informatics literature published between 2010 and 2023, the study synthesizes recurring security challenges in cloud-hosted healthcare systems and maps them to specific Azure capabilities, including Azure Active Directory, Azure Key Vault, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Azure Sentinel, and Microsoft Purview Compliance Manager. A comparative analysis is presented through two tables and a layered architecture figure that illustrate how technical controls correspond to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) safeguards. The findings suggest that Azure's shared-responsibility model, when properly configured and governed, can substantially reduce the attack surface of healthcare data while supporting regulatory compliance, though effective protection ultimately depends on the healthcare organization's own configuration discipline, staff training, and continuous risk assessment. The article concludes with recommendations for healthcare administrators and IT teams seeking to adopt or optimize Azure-based security architectures.
