Bioclimatic potential and sustainable materials in vernacular architecture in Tunisia. Study sites: Matmata and Takrouna
Abstract
Vernacular architecture in Tunisia is a living and evolving heritage of traditional skills. It exemplifies intrinsic bioclimatic strategies and the use of sustainable local materials adapted to climatic and territorial constraints. Faced with contemporary challenges related to climate change, resource scarcity, and the energy consumption of the building sector, Tunisian vernacular architecture serves as an empirical benchmark for bioclimatic design and sustainable construction. Born from a long process of adaptation to environmental constraints, this architecture is based on a deep understanding of the climate, topography, and local resources, resulting in simple and energy-efficient building forms. Through the analysis of the cases of Matmata (Southeast) and Takrouna (North-Central), this article explores how traditional forms of housing leverage geological, topographical, and climatic contexts to optimize thermal comfort, reduce energy consumption, and integrate buildings into their socio-ecological environment.
